How to prepare for your first HYROX

Ludus Magnus training guide · 6 min read · Updated

The short answer

Prepare for your first HYROX by training the transitions between running and functional stations, building repeatable aerobic output and learning to choose a pace you can sustain. You need strength and endurance, but consistent, specific practice matters more than trying to make every session maximal.

Start with repeatable fitness

A first HYROX is long enough that early enthusiasm can become expensive later. Your training should teach you to settle after each station, return to useful running form and keep producing work without large drops in pace.

At Ludus Magnus, Engine sessions use structured intervals, ergs, sleds, carries and bodyweight conditioning to develop that repeatable output. The aim is to understand your sustainable effort, not simply survive isolated hard workouts.

Train the main demands

You do not need to copy a full race every week. Build the parts consistently, then combine them in controlled sessions as your event approaches.

  • Run regularly enough that race-day running is familiar
  • Develop sound technique on ski and rowing ergs
  • Build leg strength for sleds, lunges and wall-ball work
  • Practise carrying while breathing hard
  • Train transitions without rushing the first few repetitions

Choose a realistic pace

Your opening pace should feel controlled. If the first run or station forces a major slowdown, the rest of the event becomes harder to manage. Use training to find an effort you can repeat and a station strategy that avoids unnecessary breaks.

A coach can help you compare splits across similar sessions and adjust load or volume without losing the purpose of the work.
